THE WORKING VIEW

Why this ducting earns its place

Extraction ductwork that passes through the roof or external wall needs proper sealing—and it's an easy detail to get wrong. The Combisteel Storm Collar Ø 200 mm is the right solution for smaller commercial kitchens, cafés, and compact preparation areas. It forms a tight seal where the duct exits the building, stopping cold draughts, wind-driven rain, and the insect infiltration that can block filters and reduce extraction efficiency.

Built from galvanised steel, this collar resists both kitchen humidity and external weather. The 200 mm diameter suits compact hoods and smaller ventilation systems—those used in sandwich shops, small restaurant kitchens, prep rooms, or catering vehicles. Installation is straightforward: position it over the ductwork where it breaches the roof or wall, secure it with stainless fasteners, and seal the gaps with high-temperature silicone and roofing cement.

Fitting a storm collar is a code-compliant best practice on new builds and an effective retrofit on older systems where you've noticed draughts or weather-related extraction problems. It's a small investment that protects your equipment and keeps your kitchen comfortable.

BEFORE YOU BUY

Questions, answered straight

The 200 mm collar is designed for ductwork with a 200 mm (approximately 8 inch) outer diameter. Check your extraction hood or fan specifications for duct size. Combisteel also supply 250 mm and 300 mm versions for larger systems. If you're unsure, measure the duct at the roof penetration.

Position the collar over the ductwork at the point where it exits the roof or wall. Secure it with corrosion-resistant screws or rivets, spaced 100-150 mm apart. Seal the interior with high-temperature silicone and the exterior with roofing cement or flashing tape. Allow sealant to cure for 24 hours before operating the hood at full power.

If your duct is 5-10 mm larger than 200 mm, you may be able to use a 250 mm collar instead, or consult with a HVAC engineer. If it's smaller, contact our technical team on 01792 732702 for custom options.

No. The interior is smooth and unrestricted. In fact, by eliminating draughts and air leakage around the ductwork, a properly sealed collar often improves extraction efficiency—allowing your fan to work purely on ventilation rather than compensating for gaps.

Once fitted, it's maintenance-free. Check the sealant annually (twice yearly in coastal areas) for cracks or separation. Clear any leaves or debris from the collar opening. Galvanised steel is inherently corrosion-resistant and will remain effective for 15+ years with minimal care.

Yes. Storm collars can be retrofitted to existing ductwork. You'll need to access the roof or wall at the penetration point and briefly interrupt extraction while fitting. Many kitchen engineers fit them during annual hood servicing. For advice on retrofitting your system, ring 01792 732702.
