No. 01 — The brief

The shop that never shuts

In a convenience store, the refrigeration is not equipment in the background. It is the shop. Chilled drinks, dairy, ready meals, frozen, ice cream — the cold cabinets carry most of what your customers walk in for, and they do it around the clock, on your electricity bill.

When the cold chain is right, nobody notices. When it’s wrong, you’re binning stock, apologising for warm milk and staring at a half-empty wall on a Friday night. We refit convenience stores for a living — live forecourts, city-centre Premiers, village Nisas — so this guide walks the shop the way we walk a survey: one zone at a time, with the real numbers from our catalogue attached.

The dealer’s verdict

What we’d tell you across the counter, before a penny changes hands.

We fit whole stores

Rip-out, pipework, remote condensing packs, commissioning — choreographed around your trading hours and your deliveries. Live forecourts included. The proof is in the installs below.

Doors when they pay

Open fronts sell more on impulse; doors cost far less to run. We’ll tell you straight which side of that trade your shop is on — not just sell you the dearer cabinet.

Stock that’s in stock

1,800+ display lines with real prices, deep TEFCOLD-family availability, short lead times, 2-year parts warranty — and our own service engineers after handover.

Where we’d slow you down

Don’t buy the biggest multideck the wall fits — buy the one your stock turn fills. Integral cabinets dump their heat back into a small shop; three or more big cabinets, price a remote system. And a serve-over counter rarely earns its keep in a c-store — spend that money on the drinks wall.

The drinks wall pays for the shop. Spec it like you mean it.

No. 06 — Running costs

What it costs to run

A convenience store cabinet runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The buying price is half the story — the meter tells the rest.

Efficient doored cabinet — 6 kWh/day≈ £548/year

Worked example at £0.25/kWh (kWh/day × 365 × unit rate). Check any cabinet’s real consumption with our energy label decoder — a £547-a-year gap is £2,738 over five years, which buys a lot of cabinet.

No. 09 — Q & A

Asked across the counter

What refrigeration does a convenience store actually need?
Most convenience stores run five zones: a multideck drinks and dairy wall, an impulse chiller near the till, a glass-door frozen wall, an ice cream chest, and back-of-house storage — a chest freezer or upright, or a walk-in room if the store carries volume. Bigger stores add a beer cave or food-to-go station. You don’t need everything on day one; you need the right cabinet in the zone that earns most, which is almost always the drinks wall.
Open-front or glass doors on the drinks wall?
Open-front multidecks sell more on impulse — nothing between the customer and the product. Glass doors cut the cabinet’s energy use dramatically and hold temperature better in warm shops. Our honest rule: if your margins are tight and the shop trades long hours, doors usually win over five years. Run your own numbers with our energy label decoder before you decide.
Integral or remote refrigeration for a small store?
Integral cabinets plug in and go, but every one of them dumps its waste heat back into the shop — in a small store with six cabinets that’s a hot, noisy sales floor and harder-working kit in summer. Remote systems put the condensing units outside, like the J&E Hall packs we fit on our store refits. Remote costs more up front and needs proper installation, but the shop is cooler, quieter and the cabinets last better. If you’re fitting three or more large cabinets, ask us to price both.
Can you refit a store that’s still trading?
Yes — it’s most of what we do. We refitted Aberdare Service Station on a live forecourt inside a one-week programme, and rebuilt Kenfig Hill Superstore’s entire refrigeration package after a fire. Rip-out, new pipework, condensing units and commissioning get choreographed around your deliveries and your busiest hours.
What does convenience store refrigeration cost?
From our live catalogue: ice cream chest freezers from around £387 + VAT, impulse glass-door merchandisers from around £537 + VAT, glass-door display freezers from around £899 + VAT, and doored multidecks from around £1,736 + VAT. A full drinks wall or whole-store package is priced to the site — tell us the shop and we’ll spec it. Finance is available on equipment over £1,000, subject to status.
Do you install as well as supply?
We supply, deliver, install, commission and service — UK-wide, from our Swansea base. Everything carries a 2-year parts warranty, and our own engineers come back after handover: servicing and maintenance is part of the business, not an afterthought.
