Why this ducting earns its place

When your hood is standard 400 × 400 mm but your ductwork run is 200 mm round — which happens in smaller kitchens, compact fit-outs, or where space is tight — this converter bridges the gap smoothly.

The internal taper keeps air moving instead of creating turbulence and backpressure. It's a bigger step down than a 300 mm converter, so it's best for hoods where the airflow is naturally lower, or where the ductwork runs short and straight. If your hood's trying to push a lot of air, it'll feel the squeeze.

At 400 × 400 × 280 mm, it's the same size as the 300 mm version but routes to a narrower round duct. Band it to the hood, band it to your 200 mm ductwork, and you're done.

Questions, answered straight

Realistically, 200 mm round ducting handles about 1,200–1,500 CFM (cubic feet per minute) before it gets noisy and the fan has to work hard. If your hood is bigger than that, you'd be better off with a 250 or 300 mm converter. Call 01792 732702 with your hood's CFM and we'll tell you if 200 mm will work.

You'll hear it — the fan will whine, and backpressure in a small duct builds quickly. If your kitchen's running hot and the duct feels warm, it means the fan's working too hard for the diameter. In that case, you need bigger ducting or a more powerful fan.

Not really. The smaller the diameter, the more friction builds over distance. If your ductwork has to run more than 3–4 metres, or make any tight turns, you'd be better off with 250 or 300 mm. We can work that out for you.

It's noticeable. You're squeezing a square 400 × 400 down to a 200 mm circle, which is a tighter transition than larger converters. Your extraction fan will have to work harder, so your electricity bill will be slightly higher.

With a smaller diameter, air leakage matters a bit more, so yeah — silicone sealant or self-adhesive gasket tape around the joints keeps the efficiency up. It's a small job and makes a difference.

You'd replace this converter with a 250 or 300 mm one. They're all the same 400 × 400 inlet size, so you can swap them out on the hood. You'd also need to replace the ducting to match, but the hood connection stays the same.
