This converter sits inside your extraction ducting and transitions airflow from 400 mm down to 250 mm — a substantial step often needed when a main hood feeds into a narrower secondary duct or when combining multiple hood outputs into a single run. The key to a good converter is the taper — too abrupt and you get turbulence, noise, and reduced efficiency; too gradual and it becomes unwieldy to install. A smooth taper accelerates the air — velocity increases as diameter reduces, which keeps the airflow velocity high enough to carry grease particles and prevents them settling inside the duct. Done poorly, you get backpressure and reduced efficiency; done right, your fan works easier.

If your hood outlet is 400 mm but your ducting runs through tight ceiling or wall spaces, 250 mm is often more practical. A converter lets you step down smoothly at a single point rather than forcing an abrupt change, which would kill efficiency.

This converter steps from 400 to 250 mm specifically. If you need a different step ratio (e.g. 450–300, 350–250), Combisteel makes other converters. Measure both your ducting diameters before ordering to ensure you get the right one.

The 400 mm end (larger) connects to your main hood or primary duct, and the 250 mm end (smaller) connects to the secondary run. Fitting it backwards will create severe backpressure and noise.

The converter sits inside the larger diameter duct and is held by friction or a simple clamping band (available separately). It needs to be centred and pushed fully into the 400 mm section to ensure a clean, sealed join and prevent any air bypass.

A blocked converter will reduce airflow dramatically — your fan will work harder, and you'll notice reduced suction at the hood. Check it periodically for grease accumulation, especially in high-output kitchens. A quick flush from the larger end or removal and wipe is usually enough maintenance.
