Why this under counter fridge earns its place
The Smeg MTE40 is a thermo-electric mini-bar fridge — a compact 40-litre in-room cooler for hotels, B&Bs, serviced apartments and guest suites. At 550 mm tall, 410 mm wide and 440 mm deep, it slots into a bedside cabinet, desk return or recess without demanding much floor space. The unit weighs just 11.2 kg, so it's light enough to reposition if needed.
Being thermo-electric, it runs without a conventional compressor, which suits bedrooms and quiet guest spaces where a running fridge would be noticed. It holds stock at a temperature range of +5 to +18°C, ideal for pre-chilled drinks and snacks rather than pulling new stock from warm. It is a hold-cold cabinet, so stock it from a cold room and let it maintain temperature. The reversible door and compact footprint make it easy to fit into most room layouts.
It is a freestanding plug-in unit that draws 65W from a 220–240V socket — at 24 kWh per year, the energy cost is minimal (roughly £7 per year at standard tariffs). Set it on a level surface with clearance around it for airflow and keep it clear of radiators, direct sun and sealed cabinetry so the thermo-electric cooling can shed its heat and hold temperature steadily. Check the external dimensions against your space before delivery.
