THE WORKING VIEW

Why this chopping board earns its place

The E4204 is sized for one cook at one job: 300 × 230 mm of working surface for peeling, dicing and trimming veg, small enough to carry to the sink with one hand when the section moves on. Brown is the colour a UK kitchen assigns to vegetables, and on a veg station that matters more than it looks — field veg arrives with soil on it, and soil is exactly what a colour-coded system exists to keep away from cooked food and salad.

Polyethylene is what makes it workable under a knife. The blade bites in slightly and holds its line instead of sliding, so cuts stay accurate through a long list of prep, and the edge is not being blunted on the surface the way it would be on glass or a hard composite. Twelve millimetres of thickness keeps the board flat and steady under heavy chopping rather than flexing or creeping across the bench.

Veg prep is the work that marks a board fastest, so treat the scoring as a service life indicator. When knife marks are deep enough to still hold residue after a proper wash, the board has done its time — grooves are where bacteria sit out a clean. A station-sized board makes that cheap to act on, because a marked board leaves the rack and a clean one takes over without stripping the section of a work surface.

BEFORE YOU BUY

Questions, answered straight

Brown is the colour used for vegetables in a standard commercial colour-coded board system. It keeps soil-carrying raw veg on its own surface, away from anything cooked or ready to eat.

300 mm wide, 230 mm deep and 12 mm thick — a station board rather than a full bench surface.

Polyethylene, which is the normal material for colour-coded kitchen boards. It takes a knife edge without dulling it and gives a blade something to bite into rather than skate across.

Yes — that is the point of the thickness. It keeps the board flat and stable under downward force instead of flexing, which is what makes a thin board shift and a cut wander.

Look at the scoring after washing. Once knife marks hold residue through a clean, the board is finished; deep grooves cannot be scrubbed back to a safe surface.

Yes. Ring 01792 732702 and the team will work through what a veg section needs alongside the rest of the bench.
