THE WORKING VIEW

Why this box earns its place

Counter display is mostly a problem of levels. Everything at the same height competes, and the item you most want moving is the one that disappears. This box takes a 398 × 312 mm section of the run, holds it as its own block, and stacks so that block can be lifted above the rest. Eighty millimetres per level is the useful amount: a visible step, but not so tall that a guest is reaching over their own plate or that the top tier fouls a gantry or sneeze screen.

The grey finish is the practical one for a monochrome front of house — slate boards, matt china, dark counters, painted timber. It reads as a neutral backdrop rather than a feature, so colour comes from the food and not the furniture. Underneath it is still solid oak, with the weight to stay put through a busy service and ribbed sides that take the marks a counter inevitably puts on anything within reach of a queue. Keep it to a damp cloth and a dry-off between services; standing water and dishwashers are what ruin timber on a service line, not use.

BEFORE YOU BUY

Questions, answered straight

It holds one part of the spread in a defined footprint and stacks to give that part height, so a flat counter becomes a set of levels a guest can read at a glance.

The box is 80 mm deep, so each one lifts the level above it by that much. It keeps a raised tier comfortably within reach for self-service.

398 × 312 mm of surface. Plan for space in front of it too, so guests have somewhere to hold a plate while they serve.

It is a muted, cool-toned finish rather than a strong colour, which is why it works as a backdrop for plated food, slate and matt white china.

Solid timber carries enough weight to stay where it is set on a level surface. Load it centrally rather than out over one edge and it will not rock when a guest leans in.

Wipe with a damp cloth after service and dry it off. Do not soak it or run it through a passthrough wash — water held in the grain is what dulls and lifts a timber finish.
