Why this plate earns its place
The 165 mm plate is the smallest of the Churchill Stone range — used for bread service, side vegetables, supporting sauces, or as the base plate under a soup bowl in a formal setting. It occupies the top-right of the place setting and doesn't need to carry much, which means you can make room at the table without taking up real estate. Useful for service progression: bread goes down first, main plate replaces it at the main course, and it's gone before dessert.
Porcelain takes heat and cold equally, so this plate can be pre-warmed or chilled for a tasting menu with no material stress. At this smaller size, thermal mass works in your favour — it cools quickly enough that you're not holding a hot plate in a pass for long. The underglaze sunburst is identical to the larger plates in the range, so a setting builds visual consistency from bread plate through main and into dessert.
Stack these tight — at 305 g per plate, twelve pack into tight storage without burden. The glazed foot prevents scratching when stacked, and the dishwasher brings them out ready to use. In high-service venues, one set of side plates often cycles through three or four rounds of service in an evening, so durability at the smaller scale matters more than you'd think.
