THE WORKING VIEW

Why this platter earns its place

Melamine platters are the standard for high-turnover service: they survive busy services, stacked passes, and regular dishwasher cycles without chipping or crazing that comes with ceramic. This two-thirds gastronorm size hits the middle ground for sharing plates, side presentation, and family-style service at tables that need something bigger than a side plate but smaller than a full-size platter.

The textured black slate finish does the real work here. A smooth black background can make food look dark and unappealing—the texture catches light and gives subtle visual lift to anything plated on it. Colours pop; whites read bright; even simple plates look considered. The finish also hides service marks and fingerprints that a gloss surface would announce to diners.

Melamine's practical advantage is durability through the working day: hot food doesn't warp it, stacking doesn't crack it, and a standard dishwasher cycle brings it clean without the handling care ceramic demands. Restaurants, hotels, and event caterers use these for high-volume turns where replacing broken stock costs time and money.

BEFORE YOU BUY

Questions, answered straight

Yes, at standard commercial cycles. Avoid the hottest or longest cycles if you run tests locally, but melamine in a hotel or restaurant passthrough washer runs reliably for years.

Texture breaks up light reflection and hides service marks. It also gives visual separation between the food and the plate, which makes simple plating look more intentional. A smooth black platter can flatten food; this one works for it.

Melamine is not safe above 70°C, so no. It's a front-of-house piece for plating and table service. Use ceramic ramekins or cast iron if you need oven-to-table.

The black marble has a high-gloss finish that's shinier and more reflective. This one's textured—less shine, more subtle. Choose gloss for contemporary fine dining, textured if you want food to read brighter.

Melamine can pick up stains from beetroot, turmeric, and red wine if left sitting, but a commercial dishwasher removes them. Odours don't cling to melamine the way they do ceramics.
