THE WORKING VIEW

Why this ducting earns its place

The 200 mm round elbow is the go-to size for most small to medium commercial kitchens. It's large enough to move serious heat and steam from a cooking line without undersizing, but compact enough to route through tight plant rooms and suspended ceilings.

Round ducting at 200 mm diameter gives you the efficiency of smooth pipe — less friction loss than square, quieter operation, easier to clean. This is the size you'll find specified most often when a kitchen needs extraction that just works without fuss. Restaurants, takeaways, pubs, and small hotel kitchens all gravitate toward 200 mm round as the sweet spot.

The 90° elbow lets you make proper corners. Route it from your hood or cooking zone to a main trunk, or use it to snake ducting around an awkward ceiling void. The smooth curve of the bend keeps air moving efficiently — no turbulence, no pressure spikes that leave extraction gasping.

BEFORE YOU BUY

Questions, answered straight

For most small to medium kitchens with standard cooking equipment — grills, fryers, ranges, prep counters — 200 mm is the right choice. If you're planning a very small operation (just a grill or single cooker), you might go smaller; if you're a big hotel kitchen with extensive cooking, you'd step up to 250 mm. Talk to an extraction engineer to be sure.

Yes, with transitions. You'd use a stepped reducer or expander to go from one size to another. This is common when a small feeder duct connects to a larger main trunk. Your installer will specify the right transition piece.

The air-handling capacity depends on fan speed and system design, but 200 mm is typically rated for flow in the 1,000–2,000 m³/h range — plenty for a busy but not enormous kitchen. Your extraction engineer will calculate the exact requirement based on your cooking equipment and room size.

A 200 mm round pipe has less surface area and lower friction loss than a 200 mm square duct. Round feels more modern, is quieter, and is slightly more efficient. Square ducting of similar size is easier to fit into tight rectangular spaces. For most new systems, round is the preferred choice.

Good round ducting shouldn't transmit much vibration. Make sure your fan is properly mounted on vibration isolators, and your ducting is well-supported so it doesn't rattle against the structure. Combisteel fittings are solid and don't amplify noise — that's all down to the fan and support.
