Why this preserve jar earns its place
The Kilner jar is an icon — and for good reason. This is the workhorse of proper food storage. The litre capacity makes it the go-to size for preserves, jams, pickles and bulk dry storage (rice, flour, sugar, pasta, dried herbs). The wide mouth is genuinely useful: you can reach in with a spoon or scoop, it's easy to fill, and there's no fiddling with narrow openings when you're mid-service.
The glass is thick and durable, the metal screw-top lid is made from two pieces (a metal ring and a glass disc), which means it's replaceable if it ever gets damaged — a practical advantage over one-piece closures. The design has been proven across decades of kitchen use. When you screw the lid down properly, it creates an airtight seal that keeps contents fresh and protected.
Dishwasher safe, which matters in kitchens where everything eventually goes through the machine. The jar is ideal for long-term storage of dry goods — flour won't go rancid, rice stays clean, spice blends stay potent — because the seal actually keeps air out. For preserving (jams, pickles, chutneys), these jars are industry-standard. And if you're batch-cooking stocks, soups or reductions that need to last in the fridge or freezer, the glass won't crack under thermal stress the way some plastics will.
