Why this preserve jar earns its place
This is the Kilner jar that inspired the whole category. The metal clip and rubber seal design has sealed preserves since 1842, and this 350ml version is the working size: large enough to hold a real batch of jam or pickle, small enough to fit any standard shelf. The metal clip is satisfying to use—flip it down and you know the seal is engaged. No guessing, no ratcheting torque, just mechanical closure you can feel.
The rubber seal does the actual sealing work. When you clip down, you compress the seal between the glass rim and the lid, creating an airtight chamber. As your preserve cools and contracts, the seal holds vacuum—that's food preservation working. The metal clip sits outside the seal path, so you can replace the rubber independently. Both are freezer-safe; both are designed for repeated use.
At 350ml, it's proportional and professional. Big enough that you're not wasting seals on tiny batches, small enough that a batch of jam actually fills the jar without fussing. The cylindrical shape stacks flat against other jars, and the 110mm height places it on a shelf without towering. Clear glass shows the contents—you see whether the preserve is set, whether the colour is what you wanted, whether it's ready to move to the window.
