Why this board earns its place
The Olympia slate tray is the departure from laminate and metal—a genuine material statement that reads contemporary and intentional on every plate. Real varnished slate at 1/2 GN size (325×265mm) sits between the intimate and the substantial, perfect for single portions, small charcuterie, composed appetisers, and tasting presentations where the plating itself is as important as the food. At 1.9 kg, it has weight and presence that plastic or metal cannot match.
Slate is a thermal insulator, which means it keeps hot food warm longer than thin laminate and doesn't conduct cold as aggressively as metal. That thermal character means you can plate onto a slate tray minutes before service without the food temperature dropping as quickly as it would on a cold surface. The natural black finish and varnished surface read as intentional luxury—a tray whose aesthetic contributes to the plate narrative rather than disappearing behind the food.
The varnished finish protects the slate from staining while preserving the natural texture and colour depth. Hand-washing is required (not dishwasher-safe), but cleaning is straightforward: warm soapy water and a soft cloth between services. The surface won't degrade or discolour with time; slate improves in character as it ages. At 7mm thick, it's slim enough to present elegantly yet rigid enough to handle daily service.
