THE WORKING VIEW

Why this display stand earns its place

A ladder stand is the answer to the counter that has run out of width. It stands 500 mm high on a 500 × 300 mm base, so the space one platter would have taken flat now carries two levels of display, and the upper tier sits in a guest's eyeline instead of below the counter edge. That is the difference between a display seen from the queue and one only seen by the person standing directly over it.

Acacia is the reason it holds a room. The timber runs from honey through to deep chocolate in the same board, so no two stands look identical and the grain does the decorating — nothing on the counter has to be styled around it. It is a dense hardwood, which is what you want in something being loaded and unloaded through a service: it takes the handling, and the marks it picks up read as character rather than damage.

Set it on a level surface, load the bottom tier as heavily as the top and it stays planted. Keep the routine simple — a damp cloth and an immediate dry-off after service. Timber does not want soaking, and it does not go through the wash.

BEFORE YOU BUY

Questions, answered straight

A 500 × 300 mm footprint, standing 500 mm high. It buys vertical display in a space that would otherwise hold a single flat platter.

Sightlines. The upper tier sits above the counter run, so guests see the offer from the queue rather than discovering it when they reach the front.

It is a dense hardwood and handles the loading and unloading a service line puts it through. Expect the colour to deepen with use — that is normal for the timber.

On a level surface, yes. Load the lower tier at least as heavily as the upper one and keep the weight centred over the frame rather than out at the front edge.

A damp cloth and dry it immediately. Never leave it standing in water and never put it through a passthrough wash — that is what destroys timber serviceware.

Not really. Acacia carries several tones through one piece, so it sits with white china, slate and dark glaze equally well.
