THE WORKING VIEW

Why this serving bucket earns its place

A serving bucket does the job a side plate does badly: it holds a portion contained, so chips stand rather than spread and bread stays together on the way to the table. It is 11 cm in diameter and 8 cm high, holding 550 ml — a single portion of chips, or the bread for two — in a round footprint about the width of a side plate.

Those proportions are the working detail. Wider than it is tall, it sits low enough on a dressed table that people can still see across it, and there is enough sidewall to keep a portion up off the surface without anyone having to reach down into a deep pot. It is also a one-handed clear: the shape gives a thumb somewhere to go when two are coming off a table at once. The antique silver finish is muted rather than mirror-polished, so it takes handling marks from the pass without showing every one, and it does not throw lighting back across the table.

The one thing to plan for is washing. It is plated stainless steel and it is not dishwasher safe, so it needs hand washing in warm soapy water and drying straight afterwards. On a site that puts everything through a passthrough, that is a decision to make before ordering: buckets like this belong to a front-of-house wash-and-dry routine, not the machine rack.

BEFORE YOU BUY

Questions, answered straight

No. It is not dishwasher safe. Wash it by hand in warm soapy water and dry it straight away — the plated finish is what rules out a machine cycle.

550 ml, at 11 cm in diameter and 8 cm high. In service that is one portion of chips, bread for two, or a table's olives and pickles.

Depth. A tall, narrow vessel keeps a portion standing instead of spreading, holds fried food up out of the steam at the base, and takes far less of a laid cover than a flat dish of the same volume.

It is 8 cm high against an 11 cm diameter, so it is wider than it is tall and sits on a broad base — the proportions that keep a loaded bucket steady when a table gets knocked.

An aged, low-shine finish hides handling marks and fingerprints far better than a mirror polish. Water spots are the thing to watch, which is why drying it as it comes out of the sink matters more than how it is washed.

Call 01792 732702 with your cover count. Because these are a hand-wash item, most sites carry more than one per table so service is never waiting on the sink.
