Why this serving bucket earns its place
A serving bucket does the job a side plate does badly: it holds a portion contained, so chips stand rather than spread and bread stays together on the way to the table. It is 11 cm in diameter and 8 cm high, holding 550 ml — a single portion of chips, or the bread for two — in a round footprint about the width of a side plate.
Those proportions are the working detail. Wider than it is tall, it sits low enough on a dressed table that people can still see across it, and there is enough sidewall to keep a portion up off the surface without anyone having to reach down into a deep pot. It is also a one-handed clear: the shape gives a thumb somewhere to go when two are coming off a table at once. The one thing to plan for is washing. It is plated stainless steel and it is not dishwasher safe, so it needs hand washing in warm soapy water and drying straight afterwards.
