THE WORKING VIEW

Why this salt & pepper mill earns its place

Height commands attention. This 135 mm pepper mill is tall enough that it catches your eye across a table, and the clear acrylic body shows exactly when it needs refilling. The ceramic grinding mechanism is what matters most: it won't dull or stick, and it delivers consistent grind texture from first turn to last.

Acrylic is the practical choice for a pepper mill that needs to survive 300+ service cycles a year. It doesn't shatter if it falls. It doesn't absorb the oil and aroma of peppercorns. It stays transparent season after season, which means diners can see the whole berries inside and get that small quality signal of freshness. Ceramic grinds whole peppercorns efficiently; the mechanism outlasts cheap alternatives by years.

This is the pepper mill that diner's hands won't fumble with, and that kitchen staff will actually refill rather than leave empty. One turn of the top produces a burst of fresh pepper—the kind that matters for finishing a plate properly.

BEFORE YOU BUY

Questions, answered straight

Whole black peppercorns only. Buy them in bulk from your supplier (not grocery-store jars, which dry out and grind unevenly). Store in an airtight container away from light.

Unscrew the top cap. Pour whole peppercorns into the chamber until full. Screw the cap back tight. Don't overfill, which can jam the mechanism.

A gentle turn is enough. If you're grinding hard and nothing comes out, the mechanism is jammed (usually damp peppercorns). Unscrew the top, shake out any debris, and dry the interior before refilling.

With daily use in a busy restaurant, expect 2–3 years of reliable grinding before the action slows noticeably. Contact Craven Cooling on 01792 732702 to check if replacement cartridges are available for your model.

The acrylic body is dishwasher-safe on standard settings. Remove the top cap and hand-wash it separately. Keep the grinding mechanism out of the dishwasher; just rinse under warm water and dry thoroughly before reassembly.

The height makes it more visible and reachable on larger tables. Pepper mills also sit better at 135 mm—the extra height gives your hand better leverage for turning the grind mechanism.
