Why this blackboard earns its place
297 x 460 mm is the counter board — the size that is read across a room rather than across a table. That is what it is for: a cake counter, a deli display, the head of a buffet line, the back of a bar. It carries a full list where a smaller board carries a line, so the whole dessert menu, the day's specials with prices, or a run of cheeses with their provenance all fit without the writing shrinking to the point where nobody bothers. It is a display piece rather than table furniture, and it wants a counter or a servery end, not a laid cover.
The full-width base is doing real work at this size, because a board 460 mm tall standing on a busy counter meets sleeves, trays and trolleys all day and needs a stance across its whole width rather than a foot. The handle hole means one person moves it, sets it and clears it without two hands or a trolley. Both faces are writable, which at A3 usually means the standing display on one side and tomorrow's list built up on the other during the quiet hour. Painted MDF is wiped, not washed — a dry cloth for chalk, barely damp for pen — and it is kept away from the wet section, because water taken in at the edge of an MDF board does not come back out.
