THE WORKING VIEW

Why this riser earns its place

A box riser does a different job from an open stand. Because the sides are closed, it reads as a solid plinth: the item on top is presented rather than propped, and whatever is behind or beneath it on the counter is screened from view. At 120 x 120 mm it is a small square, sized for one plate, bowl, board or jar, and the 100 mm of lift is enough to separate that item from the flat run of dishes around it without cutting the sightline across the table.

Hollow construction is what makes it practical to work with. A solid block of that size in hardwood is a two-hand lift and slow to reposition mid-service; a hollow box is light enough to move with one hand while the other holds a plate, which is how staging actually gets adjusted once a service is running. The flat top and square sides also mean it sits square against other pieces on the line, so you can build a stepped run without gaps opening up between elements.

Acacia is dense and close-grained with a warm mid-brown tone and visible figure, and it carries the marks of a working service better than a painted or gloss finish. Clean it by hand with a cloth and a food-service cleaner and dry it before storage. Keep it out of standing water and away from the wash-up, since prolonged soaking is what ruins timber display pieces.

BEFORE YOU BUY

Questions, answered straight

It is 100 mm tall, which lifts one dish clearly out of a flat row without standing high enough to block the view of the display behind it.

120 x 120 mm square. That is a small, defined footprint you can plan into a service line, and the square shape means it sits flush against other pieces rather than leaving awkward gaps.

Weight and handling. Hollow acacia is light enough to lift and reposition with one hand mid-service, where a solid hardwood block of the same size is slow and two-handed.

It presents the item on top as though on a plinth and screens the counter surface beneath it, which is useful when the base of the display is not something you want customers looking at.

Wipe it with a cloth and a food-service cleaner and dry it before it goes back into storage. Wooden display pieces are cleaned by hand, not run through a machine wash.

Natural timber varies in grain and tone, so pieces are close rather than identical. That variation is normal for acacia and generally reads as warmth against white china and stainless.
