THE WORKING VIEW

Why this box earns its place

At 120 mm this is a podium rather than a step. That is the height that gives a buffet its back line — the level everything else is arranged in front of — and it is what stops a long counter from reading as one flat plane. The footprint is a 2/3 at 424 × 398 mm, narrower than a full width, which is what makes it usable as a raised block within a run rather than a shelf across the whole of it. Dark brown oak carries that height well: the tone reads as evening and low light, and pale food set on top of it is thrown into relief.

Height changes how a spread has to be arranged. A 120 mm block wants to sit towards the back of a display so nothing is being reached over, and once it is there it does the work of making a half-served counter still look composed. There is a lot of side on show at this height, which is where the ribbing pays: vertical shadow lines break up what would otherwise be a slab of dark timber, and they take the scuffs of a service line without showing them. It is solid oak, heavy enough to hold its position when a guest leans on the counter. Wipe it with a damp cloth and dry it immediately — no soaking, and never through the wash.

Questions, answered straight

120 mm. That is a display height rather than a step, so it works best towards the back of a spread where nothing has to be reached over it.

424 × 398 mm — a 2/3 width, so it raises part of a run rather than the whole of it.

A flat counter reads as one mass and looks depleted the moment it is served from. A raised back line keeps the spread looking arranged all the way through service.

Contrast and mood. Pale food comes forward against dark timber, and the tone suits evening service better than pale wood does.

Solid oak gives it the mass to stay put on a level counter. Keep the load centred over the top and it will not shift.

Damp cloth and an immediate dry-off. Timber should not be soaked and does not go through a passthrough wash.
