THE WORKING VIEW

Why this kick bowl earns its place

An 18 cm coupe bowl with the characteristic kick base — a recessed ring at the bottom that stabilises the bowl and prevents it sliding under service. At 66 centilitres it's the midpoint between a soup bowl and a serving dish, holding enough for a main-course accompaniment (rice, couscous, a warm sauce) or a shared pudding without committing to full tureen territory. The vitrified china body holds heat effectively, so warm food stays warm without active re-plating.

The kick base is built into the design: it stops the bowl sliding on polished tables and gives kitchen staff a secure grip point when moving hot bowls in the rush. The white glaze wears invisibly across long services.

Questions, answered straight

The 18 cm holds 66 cl and is designed for individual or two-person service. The 21 cm holds 1.08 litres and is the table-share size. Pick 18 cm if bowls are cycling hot from the kitchen; use 21 cm if they're sitting on the table all service.

Yes. Sixty-six centilitres is the working size for a warm sauce or jus running a full service. It's less than a traditional jug but enough to portion three or four tables without backfilling.

Vitrified china can go in a microwave safely, but commercial kitchens typically don't — the bowl grips heat. If you do heat it, remove it carefully; the handle points are hot.

Yes. The kick base works equally for a warm flan or a cold summer pudding. Serve it at the right temperature — don't pull from a cold store and plate directly or condensation will ruin the plating.

The kick rings interlock, so bowls stack tight and stable. You can safely stack 20–30 bowls. The kick base of one bowl sits inside the rim of the bowl below.

Not ideally. Soup bowls are typically shallower and wider to accommodate a spoon. Use this for sauce, starch, or pudding. For soup, use a dedicated soup bowl in the same range.
