THE WORKING VIEW

Why this bowl earns its place

The Heligan range uses a glaze technique where the green surface develops natural tonal variation during the kiln firing, creating swaths of lilac and turquoise across each piece. This reactive glaze is not painted on but emerges from the clay body, making every bowl subtly different. At 15cm diameter, the bowl is a single-serving or starter vessel — holds enough for one guest's portion of soup, a dipping sauce bowl, or an amuse course.

Vitrified stoneware differs from glazed earthenware in density and durability. The firing process fuses the glaze into the material rather than sitting on its surface, which means the colour is embedded and will not chip away with heavy use. A bowl used daily in a busy kitchen service will take the wear without losing its aesthetic — the surface may scratch slightly, but the mark is material, not a flaw waiting to propagate. The stoneware body also retains heat longer than thinner ceramics, so hot food stays hot from plate to table.

The 15cm bowl works for both oven-to-table service and cold serving. Microwave safe for reheating, dishwasher safe for the commercial cycle. This size stacks reliably and densely — ideal for storage or pre-laying large table services without taking up cupboard space.

Questions, answered straight

A standard soup or appetiser portion uses 150–200 ml. A 15cm round bowl holds approximately 300–400 ml depending on depth, so comfortably one generous serving.

Yes, vitrified stoneware is microwave safe. Reheat carefully — the bowl retains heat well, so warn staff that the rim will be hot.

Vitrified stoneware can withstand oven heat, but check your operations manual — if your dishwasher runs hotter than your oven, the glaze is proven in your workflow.

15cm bowls stack securely without stress to the base. Stack up to eight full bowls high for compact storage.

Vitrified stoneware is more chip-resistant than thin porcelain, but any ceramic can chip if dropped on a hard floor. The reactive glaze is durable in the dishwasher and under normal use.

Yes, each glaze firing produces slight variation in the lilac and turquoise highlights. This is not a defect — it is the nature of the reactive glaze.
